Nina Gotsis is a Sydney songwriter and musician who is influenced by country, pop and the beauty of the natural world. She learned guitar by spending hours playing in an upstairs bedroom in her old home at Bardwell Park, honing an interest in classic progressions and distinctive strumming patterns. Nina was a member of the Junction House Band with Lindy Morrison (Go-Betweens), and after the band ceased she continued to write prolifically. Recently Nina started to work with the Club Weld studio for neurodiverse musicians, and she recorded a set of songs at Information & Cultural Exchange (I.C.E.) in Parramatta. The resulting release is ‘Music Colours’ which is out on August 2 and features seven songs: Endless Country, Frozen River, Night Waterfall, Australian Bird, Country Garden, Daydream and Listen To The Bird. I’ve been writing music for 15 years, and I’m very happy that people can listen to these songs on CD and in performances – Nina Gotsis Nina features on guitar and percussion throughout, playing with her core band which includes Toby Martin (Youth Group) and Sam Worrad (The Holy Soul). Nina also sings and plays the drums on Daydream. Other guest musicians are George Xylouris (Xylouris/White), Apollonia Xylouris (Bandidas), Sonia Zadro (Hotel) and Kate Wilson (Sachet). I love singing Nina’s songs. I feel I can really get inside them, and live in them. And what a beautiful world it is to live in. These songs are so joyous – about the beauty of everyday nature around us that we ordinarily miss. Waterfalls at night, light shining through gardens, native birds. Nina sees the world differently, she is an artist like that – Toby Martin ‘Music Colours’ was recorded by Aria-nominated producer Chris Hamer-Smith. Currently, Nina is working with conductor Sarah Penicka-Smith to create a choral version of her song Frozen River, with the River City Voices symphonic choir. She has also collaborated with Helena Papageorgiou on a video for Frozen River.
