Emerging from Perth in 2017 as the solo moniker of Ellen Oosterbaan (Catbrush) - late 2018 saw Oosterbanger expand to its current form with the addition of Jane Azzapardi (CALMLY), Indigo Foster-Tuke (Cuss) and Jordan Shakespeare (Dumbleachers, CUSS, Supernaked). Noisy, melodic, lyrically mature and at times emotionally and aurally intense, Oosterbanger’s chaotic play with dreamy soundscapes and heavier grunge, doom stylings explore the viscerality of music and its’ ability to shift audiences between the comfort of catchy riffs and ‘in-yer-face’ moments. Ellen worked closely with now drummer, Jordan, who recorded and produced the raw and emotive 2016 solo release Purge Demos. This union inspired the addition of Jane and Indi to the band in 2019 as they commenced work on new material in his Fremantle studio. Oosterbanger’s debut band single Head Is A Junkyard was released in 2019 and continued to revolve around the raw sounds evidenced in Purge Demos. The single explores the chaotic emotional shifts of the mind when engulfed in a depressive state. Manifested in the central lyric ‘Don’t help’, a vulnerable plea to be seen escalates to an empowered and angry accusation of dismissal. This is echoed in the chaotic shifts in musical style, encouraging listeners to physically experience the brutality and fragility explored in the lyrical content. Their self-titled EP is set for release in August 2020.
