Residing in Hobart, Tasmania, Opto Magis started as a group of mates bashing away on their cheap or borrowed instruments in 2002. By 2005, the band had gained and lost various members but July 17th saw OM perform original music, for the first time, as an instrumental three-piece. The style had changed drastically from playing late-80s/early-90s thrash metal classics to a much more free-flowing and defiantly ambling type of music. The band places heavy importance on the expressive nature of music. Despite lacking a vocal outlet for concepts, structure, in addition to theme and mood, for songs is usually derived from a set of lyrics. The content of which is often arcane and sometimes dark. Recklessly bounding through several genres, OM gives listeners a musical narrative that twists and contorts or seamlessly flows through varying stages of chaos, euphoria and other under-explored regions of the mind and music. A more literal description of the group's unique sound would make note of
