Though Pastel Jungle's sonic history is a comparatively brief one compared to similar artists in the emerging indie scene, the path that took him there is so fondly familiar. Kees's (Pastel Jungle) music touches on themes that are somehow very current whilst also being comfortably familiar. Warm productions, soothingly intimate melodies and well contemplated lyrics wrap listeners in a sonic cocoon of a nostalgic nod to the future. Although originally from the UK and owing the majority of his musical understanding to his studies undertaken in Englands no.1 arts university: Falmouth, the bulk of Pastel Jungle's creative essence formed whilst travelling Australia. In 2018 Kees made a split decision to take himself, a laptop and a copy of Logic to just about as far from home as he could. His natural affinity for composition and meaningful lyric crafting were still present but limited heavily to in the box production. A compilation of honing his electronically influenced flare for production and a wider exposure to strong Australian role models in the industry birthed a year of experimental writing which manifested in his first self produced, self mixed/mastered album 'Gold', released under the artist name KEES. His first album was more of a humbling realisation than a triumph, described himself as an 'opening door into a never-ending world of musical exploration'. Soon after a further EP release and two singles Kees returned home in 2020 with a broader understanding of his craft and a drive to progress. Pastel Jungle was created in the hopes of birthing a musical eco-system in which multiple artists would feature in the collective's future work. During the COVID pandemic Pastel Jungle opened its arms to feature several guitarists from the UK and Indonesia and release four more singles oozing nu-disco and indie-pop influenced groove; most of which featured on BBC Radio's Introducing roster several times. The lack of performing opportunities enabled Kees to launch Pastel Jungle's sound at a shattering speed into the meticulously crafted productions they are now. 'I learnt far more being pushed to the edge of production in unfamiliar environments with less than adequate gear than I ever did during my three years in a well stocked arts University' Fast forward to 2022 where Pastel Jungle heeded the call of home and returned to Australia whilst dropping his most ambitiously stylised single yet, 'Quit While You're Ahead'; an ode to the conflicting emotions of having to leave somewhere that felt so much like home. With features on youtube channels such as 'The Daily Dose' and 'David Dean Burkhart', two pioneers of showcasing emerging alternative indie talent, Pastel Jungles focus on strong, consistent releases always took precedence over performing. Kees being the the only member of the seemingly several member outfit 'Pastel Jungle', chose to focus heavily on the electronic distribution of music in the now successful hopes of building a committed, organic fanbase. Now based in Byron Bay, NSW and incorporating tasteful nods to strong Australian influences such as 'Tame Impala' and 'Parcels' in his future releases, Pastel Jungle was fortunate enough to become good friends with Adam Harpaz, an emerging indie singer-songwriter powerhouse. Adam's invaluable industry experience having toured heavily and working with top producers such as Kevin Anderson and Jordan Power (Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga and Angus) paired perfectly with Pastel Jungle's innate ability to craft the fine tuned and analogue reminiscent production style that constitutes the rapid growth of the modern Australian indie music scene. Immediately they began working on the first collaboration of both their careers: 'Other Than Orange'. With a strong initial impact and shining promise, the harmonious agreement of their compellingly different backgrounds promises a future of ground breaking productions. After three years of dedication to the craft and a desire to progress into the physical world of music, the future for Pastel Jungle and his collaborative work is alluringly vivid.
