Yanai Morris made a small name for himself as a key force in eclectic local band Boat earlier this century with their two notable local releases, Under Fortune’s Wheel and Whispers in the Waiting Room (which are still played occasionally on local radio stations 3RRR and PBSFM). Pear Tongue’s sound is based around his unique songs and inventive guitar playing. Drummer Michael Ashdown brings his jazz training and a multitude of other influences to his innovative drumming style while Rob Koning lays down solid, interesting bass lines reminiscent of some of The Cure’s work. And like Simon Gallup, probably his biggest influence, Rob’s bass lines either play a subtle role or else stand out as attention grabbers in their own right.
