Reykjavik Orange (or just “Reyk” if it’s too hard to spell!) have existed formally since 2006, although Claire and Gemma have been making music together for most of their lives. After a number of small gigs in the last 12 months, Reykjavik Orange is ready to embark on what they have dubbed “The Year of the Orange”. Strong vocal harmonies provide the backbone of their music; as sisters, Gemma and Claire’s voices blend so cohesively it’s sometimes hard to tell who is singing, and if there are two people or just one. Instrumentally, Reyk avoids having a solo and an accompanying instrument, instead creating music where melody and harmony are blended and shared between an often percussive piano and lyrical guitar. Tuba is a special addition to the Reyk sound and is generally used melodically, subverting the listener’s expectations of the traditionally “oom-pah” instrument. Reykjavik Orange’s music invokes Claire and Gemma’s experiences growing up on the coast of WA. The Australian
