Rivvy is the latest project from Sydney producer Chumpy Ly. Having had a long history with diy production since childhood, meddling with mostly psychedelia and shoegaze (Cull, Polar Knights, Skeltal), Chumpy is setting his sights on stranger sonic avenues. Ever since adopting a rescue greyhound called Rivers 3 years ago, and experiencing the joy that he brought, Chumpy decided to pour all of his expression into celebrating Rivers. Rivvy’s writing is a juxtposition of the downtuned aggression of the heavier rock/metal genres, with the softer, happy-go-lucky sound of Japanese City Pop (シティーポップ) Rivvy’s debut track “Zoomies” builds up as a light hearted pop track that gradually drags you into a destructive, explosive post-rock climax. “Zoomies” centres around the idea that like the endless cycle of grief that greyhounds endure on the race track, humans have their own destructive cycles to break. For Chumpy, mental health issue cycles were broken upon the adoption of Rivers.
