Slow moving melodies and a uniquely nostalgic vocal style; the works of Ruby Pettit hold a mysterious space of their own in the alternative folk genre. Ruby has developed a stirring and evocative sound through intuitive experimentation involving a range of traditional and modern folk genres. After moving to Glasgow in 2019, the West Australian based musician became charmed by the dramatic landscape of the Scottish Highlands, encouraging an exploration into folk sounds from eras past. Ruby Pettit’s debut album Still We Are Rising was recorded on reel-to-reel tape over two stormy days in July 2022. This album is a collection of new works and re-recordings of earlier songs, with delicate vocal harmonies and poetic lyricism at its forefront, highlighting Ruby's haunting vocal quaver backed by gentle acoustic fingerpicking. Still We Are Rising has all the low-fi charm of a crackling vinyl platter from the 1970’s, blended with sounds from the modern freak-folk movement.
