"I saw santa she's a witch. She cuts through clouds on her broomstick, while bloated men, decorate our lawns. See a sullen bitch, just doesn't sell so well". Taylah Carroll has always liked words. To listen to them, to think about them, to write them. It makes sense then, that lyrics are the centrepiece of her craft. With stylistic echoes of Angel Olsen and Cate Le Bon, the singer-songwriter cites Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Alex Cameron, and David Bowie as key inspirations, the amalgamation of which have her leaning into nostalgia, with one foot always placed firmly ahead. Juxtaposing haunting vocals and exacting lyricism, with dramatic visual playscapes and Bowie-esque dance moves, Taylah Carroll wants to lay an other-wordly reality before her listeners. Carroll's latest release, 'maybe santa is a witch' is a feminist Christmas Carol inspired in part by Italian folklore and in part by western culture’s tumultuous history with witches, and women broadly.
