Telharmoneom is a long-running sonic laboratory helmed by Brendan Palmer and Kazumichi Grime. Since their analogue inspired genesis in 1991, they’ve sculpted a world of abstracted techno, asymmetrical rhythms, and warped sonic mutations… a slow-burning experiment in decentralised alchemical contraptionism that continues to evolve across time. Meeting on a railway station, a common interest in electronic sound led Palmer and Grime to amass a small mountain of second hand analogue synthesisers in a spare suburban bedroom. Being non-musicians, a punk inspired DIY ethos guided the creation of left-field machine music that loosely lived within the emerging rave cultural habitat. Sydney has a party town history, and rising from the ashes of the eighties hordern party juggernaut, the early nineties raves were injected into the collective consciousness by British backpackers who never left. Improvised, dusty and somewhat hazardous spaces were converted into classless, unified zones of ethereal enlightenment, and youth-fuelled liberation. Filling up their ’67 Valiant with keyboards and drum machines, Telharmoneom ventured out into the abandoned warehouses, disused silos, car parks, train yards and train tunnels. Milk crates and ironing boards propped up a non-hierarchical array of resonant frequency devices. They also founded the Clan Analogue electronic arts collective in the process, touring Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane. Fast forward thirty years and a track from a white label pressing made it onto youtube. Thousands of plays later it was heard by a young Greek-Italian based in Berlin named Giovanni, who was so enthused, he started a record label in order to release Telharmoneom’s 90s classics on a four-track EP, titled Moiré one. Inspired by this experience, they were motivated to create fresh produce. Studios were rebuilt in Sydney and Byron [Shire], old gear restored, signature techniques revived and expanded upon. Concepts once dreamed of, now realised. The musical archive has swelled considerably. Live performances at Vibe Tribe’s Re-Ignite reunion party, and the Bob Moogs Birthday Picnic in Sydney Park tested the material on big systems. Brendan presented a DJ set of the band's music in Kyoto, Japan. The sounds that define what Telharmoneom is are no longer just what happened in the 90s.
