Sydney based Alt.Country combo The April Family continue to carve out a unique place in the Australian country music landscape. With their unique blend of Alt Country rawness, featuring singer Kylie Whitney’s soulful vocal textures and unique writing style, producer/multi-instrumentalist Michael Carpenter’s production expertise and harmony skills and lead guitarist Casey Atkins’ distinct twang and harmony prowess, the ensemble have created a body of work and a loyal fanbase, while pushing themselves creatively in finding their voice. Formed in 2016, The April Family found it’s feet quickly, establishing a vital live presence in Sydney, and releasing a string of singles in the lead up to their debut album “What We Know Now” released in 2017. The successful album spawned 3 well received singles, with strong airplay and good chart results. The album showcased the combination of West Coast 70’s classic country rock, high production values and the band’s showcase 3 part harmonies. The band’s sound continued to evolve, moving towards a more raw, worked sound on their second album “House of Cards” released in 2019. The album was a top 5 ARIA Country Chart album, reflected in positive reviews throughout the world. This album also had a trio of singles showcasing the band’s development, all while maintaining their popularity in the country music community. The band also released a covers EP called “Cannonball (An EP of Others’ Songs) at the same time as the album release. The band toured successfully on the back of the second album release and went into 2020 with much ambition and optimism. It then took a measured way of navigating lockdowns and pandemics, writing and getting together whenever possible, and after a little break, released the first of 6 singles in late 2020, leading up to their latest single, released in August 2024. This stretch of singles, all to be included on their 3rd album in September 2024, show a band continuing to poke at their own perception of themselves. It includes excursions into folk, blues, rock and refined version of their beloved Alt.Country, all with their signature 3 part harmonies, soulful vocals and twangy guitar work. A chapter of the band’s story closed in June 2024 however, with Casey Atkins announcing a desire to step down from the recording side of the band on the completion of album 3. Whitney and Carpenter are committed though to pushing the band on towards its 10 year anniversary in 2026 and beyond!
