The Black Penny Project define their sound as Neo-Roots. An organic mash up of roots, funk, hip-hop and reggae... this 6-piece band from Perth have more pop than Fat Freddy’s Drop, a darker undertone than The Cat Empire, and aspire to the dynamics of US Hip Hop act, The Roots. They take pleasure in luring songs into a false sense of smooth rhythm and blues, only to smash it with fierce power bass riffs or drop it into a dub groove. Fronted by two brothers, one a soulful roots singer and the other a charismatic MC, their different styles create an unlikely harmony that crosses musical genres and brings to life The Black Penny Project.
