The Bushwackers are Australia’s best-known, most-loved Australiana band, celebrating 50 years of performance in 2021. They play Australian music, much of it based on the traditional folk and working songs from the early 20th century, infused with their own brand of contemporary subject matter and instrumentation. With their politics and social conscience proudly worn on their sleeve, the band combines original material with a traditional repertoire. Through the late 70’s to the mid 80’s, The Bushwackers were renown for their popular bush dances, attracting up to 3000 people at major venues throughout Australia. They released The Dance Album and accompanying instructional Dance Book, both of which went on to become staples in primary schools across the nation. Now in their 50th year, The Bushwackers continue to be led by the mighty lagerphone of Dobe Newton and the musical direction of Roger Corbett, with both being joined onstage by a great team of musicians wielding fiddles, accordions, guitars, bass and drums. Rolling Stone Magazine have described The Bushwackers as “The Australian Band” and they have plenty to celebrate during their Golden Jubilee year, after being recognised for their achievements and contribution to Australian music with their induction into the Australasian Country Music Roll of Renown on 23 January at the Golden Guitars in Tamworth.
