It’s the sort of band where the dancing happens without intent. One can’t not dance to this band. The bumcheeks of even the most staunch non-dancer are eventually going to lift from the barstool, left and right, left and right, following the walking baseline of Shannon Hurry on drums and Robin “Fab” Nelson on bass. True to the tradition of original Jamaican ska, the rhythm is upbeat and colourful pulling in the melodies of guitar, keyboard, trumpet and trombone. It’s unmistakably Skatalities yet something more contemporary as well. The rocksteady rhythm section is there to stay, but the storyline heads off on a journey to its calypso cousins, dropping in on its reggae roots (think Toots and the Maytals), before heading home with dub soul and funk in tow (think Fat Freddy’s Drop). The venue is pumping. It’s party time though no one is quite sure whose party it is. Jodie Kell on Trumpet, Ingrid Moon on tenor sax and Phil Stuckey on Trombone skip along in a style at once rambunctious
