The Cassette Scandal started as a spontaneous effort in late December 2021 by Mitchell Birkett, an Indigenous Artist, Songwriter, Producer, and former Pro MMA fighter (AKA The Koori Kid.) It was a cathartic response to a traumatic accident that occurred in 2021 leaving his daughter Arabella with burns to 50% of her body. The project soon became a way to pass the time during lockdown and deal with the social dogma and stress permeating society. Since then, The Cassette Scandal has featured heavily on numerous Spotify Playlists such as Original Storytellers, Deadly Beats and Local Noise. The project continues with no sign of slowing down. The Cassette Scandal's music has been likened to post-punk poets such as John Cooper Clarke, Sleaford Mods, and Dry Cleaning by Australian industry critics. Despite this The Cassette Scandal writes from a uniquely Aboriginal-Australian perspective highlighting First Nations struggles that stem from colonization and dispossession.
