THE NAME: Clark Stanley was the self-styled "Rattlesnake King". Born circa 1854 in Texas, he is famous for popularizing snake oil as a patent medicine, and is the primary inspiration for the definition of the term "Snake Oil Salesman", in all its connotations. Clark Stanley was a shameless self promoter and master of marketing. Claiming that he had learnt the secrets of medicinal snake oil from an Indian medicine man, he found great success hocking his wares at wild western medicine shows; quickly becoming a huge success due to his flamboyant stage act, which included the killing of live rattlesnakes. After the intruduction of food and drug quality regulations in the US at the turn of the century, his snake oil was tested and found to have almost no medicinal value, and contained no actual snake oil.
