The Descenters are the primary solo project of non-binary autistic writer and musician Maddison Stoff exploring what could broadly be characterized as ‘negative emotions’ through a unique style of lo-fi electronic music influenced predominately by post-punk, darkwave, noise, and riot grrrl. Self-recorded, self-produced, and self-promoted, the project has survived through poverty, mental illness, and a multi-year abusive relationship. Even at their darkest, there’s an element of hope to these recordings. They are a form of therapy, and a much needed emotional outlet for the artist, who struggles with communication while wanting to create connections between themselves, and other people who might feel the same. Because that’s what music is: communication. Fans of bands like Majical Cloudz, Xiu Xiu, or Grimes should find something to appreciate here, as well as anyone who's ever felt depressed or isolated.
