Buga Yanu Junba was created by educators, Elders and musicians connected with Baya Gawiy Buga yani Jandu yani u – the early childhood education and family centre run by Marninwarntikura Women’s Resource Centre in Fitzroy Crossing, WA. Emerging out of Tura’s Sound FX residencies with support from musician–researcher Dr Gillian Howell, Tura and the University of Melbourne, the project brings together songs written and performed by community members including Patsy Ngalu Bedford, Irene Bent (dec.), Patricia Cox, Samantha Frank, Jayedene Green, Maria Marmingee Hand, Susan Hoad, Robyn Long, Eva Nargoodah, June Nixon, Cissy Nugget, Amarillo Oscar, June Oscar AO, David ‘Bullen’ Rogers, Delphine Shandley and Brenda Shaw. Sung in Bunuba, Gooniyandi, Walmajarri, Kimberley Kriol and English, the album and songbook celebrate the strength of Kimberley languages and culture while offering a joyful, practical tool for early-years learning.
