The Honeyjoys draw from a wide range of influences, plenty of them unfashionable. Some songs reflect a straight-faced reprisal of the classic sounds of bands such as Fleetwood Mac, others the jangly vulnerability of The Sundays. Other songs emerge from more of a folk tradition reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens and combine jazzy or bluesy embellishments with a Furtardo-esque vocal delivery. Most of the songs are about creating a mood or feeling and are consequently more visceral than cerebral, but thematically the songs range from death and anxiety to escape and redemption.
