The Insufferable Paul Scott is a Sydney-based Australian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and prolific figure in the indie music scene, known for his sharp lyrical wit, eclectic sound, and self-deprecating persona encapsulated in his moniker. Emerging from a long career that spans rock, pop, and experimental indie genres, Scott has distinguished himself both as a solo artist and as a collaborator in numerous bands and projects. Scott first made his mark in music as a bassist and songwriter with the angular New Zealand group Pop Mechanix, whose single “Jumping Out a Window” became an enduring piece of NZ pop culture despite the band’s internal challenges and legal issues. After relocating to Australia, he co-founded the band Montana with Ken Stewart (Mr Blonde), Michelle Margherita and Steve Melville. Montana’s single “Koolest Band” gained national airplay on Triple J and was featured in the Hollywood film You Drive Me Crazy following a US tour and SXSW appearance. Transitioning into his solo career under the playful title The Insufferable Paul Scott, he released his debut album Surrender to Robots in 2019, a genre-blending collection of melodic and introspective miniatures that showcased his DIY sensibilities. Subsequent releases—including the Radio Station EP (2020) and the critically appreciated album Tea and Medals (2021), recorded during the pandemic with collaborators like Steve Melville and Tim Powles—further refined his sound, combining indie rock, synth-pop, and jangle pop influences. In 2024 and 2025, Scott continued his creative momentum with projects like Dopamine Mining, the single “Superstar Housewife,” and “Extinct,” solidifying his reputation for thoughtful songwriting, layered arrangements, and a uniquely playful artistic identity.
