Two distinct acts feauring the same members are known as The Charles Manson Experiment or "The Mansons": An aggressive originals "art-grunge" band which frequently drew comparisons to Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins, and a semi-acoustic group that played mostly interpretations of music by Charles Manson and "The Family". The covers group still exists as a side-project, catering to the niche "outsider art" market. In 2009 the band's original material really began to evolve, leading to collaborations with other musicians and writers (notably Simon Day). The change in direction saw the group embracing elements of country and blues and adopting a heavy focus on surf-rock sounds - and marked a much-needed shift away from the "gothic" brand. The band were contacted by producer Kramer and decided to work with him on their debut album, re-naming themselves "The Glimmer".
