Formed in the share houses of the Ninch in 2016-17 by Ryan Taylor (Shaky) and begun as The Shaky Knee Dream Machine, the outfit featured Bill Stewart on bass, Lachlan Daff on sax and Daniel Musumeci on drums. Playing their mates' parties on sketchy sound systems and throwing sketchier DIY gigs in the roastery warehouse where Shaky worked, they fast earned a reputation for a blistering live show ‘full of wailing horns, jazzy chords and a stack of energy’ (Moonah Arts Collective) and an atypical back catalogue of composed mayhem. With a brass- infused sound reminiscent of GONG and King Gizzard, 2018 saw the Dream Machine’s release of Red Dead Demos, a garage/ psych prototype recorded by Matt Farley & Taylor featuring Daff on tenor saxophone. The further addition of Felix Meredith on trumpet furthered the band’s jazz rock fusion sensibilities, like Zappa’s Mothers or King Crimson drenched in delay.
