The Three Seas (AUS/IND) fuse Baul mysticism, Himalayan folk, rock, and spiritual jazz into a sound both ancient and new. Formed in Santiniketan, West Bengal, in 2009, the ensemble brings together Australian saxophonist Matt Keegan with West Bengali and Nepali virtuosos Raju Das Baul (vocals, khamak), Deo Ashis Mothey (dotora, esraj, murchunga), and Gaurab “Gaboo” Chatterjee (drums, dubki; Lakkhichhara, son of Moheener Ghoraguli founder Gautam Chattopadhyay), joined by Brendan Clark (bass) and Hilary Geddes (guitar). Their music transcends genre—soaring Baul vocals and Himalayan chants meet baritone sax grooves and deep tribal percussion, weaving together folk instruments and contemporary textures. The result is immersive and uplifting, a hypnotic intercultural soundscape where ancient poetry, modern improvisation, and transcendent rhythm converge. Over fifteen years, The Three Seas have released three albums—Haveli (2013), Fathers, Sons & Brothers (2017), and Afterlife (2022, Earshift)—and toured extensively across Asia, Australia, and the UK. Their forthcoming fourth album, Antaḥkaraṇa, recorded live at the legendary Real World Studios (UK) and produced by Sarathy Korwar (Leaf Label, Ninja Tune) and Dave Rodriguez (Godtet), marks a defining new chapter in their evolution.
