Live Review - The Sandringham Hotel - 15 July 2008. Despite the evening being the coldest one I've ever battled therough on my way to the Sandringham Hotel, it was the warmest and busiest one I've seen once arriving at the venue. The upstairs room was already rather full for the first band The Virgin Thursdays.A funky blues-rock quartet that displayed a striking ability to balance effciency with passion, it was hard to believe this was just their fourth gig. Professional and tight, their material was rooted firmly in genre, but escaped being formulaic. Just as I was wishing for a little more variety in their set - sure , I like rock, but let me catch my breath, fellas! - they pulled out a muted and mournful number. This band ticked all the boxes. While they may not have the presence to make themselves superstars, their immediate furture holds the promise of being one of Sydney's better pub rock outfits.
