The music of Australian sound-maker Timothy Fairless is equally at home drifting amongst field recordings topped with grand piano as it is pushing noise and hammering repetition. Perhaps competing influences of a rigid classical piano childhood followed by a rebellious free jazz adolescence took their toll - or crystallised into something else. His early work, scattered and intense, was underpinned by a post-rock aesthetic hell-bent on showing that the genre was a big house with room for everyone. Measurement was noted as “a work of depth,” by Chris Cobcroft at 4ZZZ FM. He continued, “At it’s best, those depths are found in the atmosphere of ambient, the rippling, raw power of post-rock.” In 2015, Plural was described as “an album of flow” by Richard Allen at A Closer Listen. Joe Saxby at 4ZZZ FM noted “…uplifting melodies amid swirling ambience and crumbling sonic detritus.” Flash forward and Timothy’s work is deeply focused, pushing further into dark ambient and minimalism, championing texture and tone. In 2021, Peter Hollo at Utility Fog wrote of Common Electric Glare, “It's instrumental music that draws much from drone and dark ambient, but it's also very expressive, and anything but static. I'm reminded of Ben Frost's early albums for Bedroom Community, and that's high praise.” In his deep-dive for 4ZZZ FM, Chris Cobcroft focused on Common Electric Glare's concepts, concluding it, “shudders with a brutal, dark ambient roar, to express its dissatisfaction.” Released in 2022 on the Flaming Pines label (London) "Rising Water" and companion live release "Superposition" were supported by multimedia performances and radio play on the BBC. Described by Peter Hollo of Utility Fog as "a powerful and engrossing work", the album is a meditation on the complex nature of water, made entirely from 4 glasses of water, and in the wake of devastating floods. 2025 will mark Timothy's first release on the LA-based Dragon's Eye Recordings. In addition to his recorded work, Timothy has scored short and feature-length films, music for broadcast TV. His collaborations with visual artists have resulted in exhibitions across Australia (including at the Queensland Art Gallery and Art Gallery of South Australia), and performances in state galleries and theatres.
