Tricking Emma play songs best heard sitting on a beach, with waves crashing behind you and sparks popping in the bonfire in front of you, a catchy coastal mix of acoustic roots and unique lyrical rhymes. Since moving their sound from the bonfire-lit beaches of their youth to Melbourne’s inner-city backyards, the boys have played some of Melbourne’s finest live venues, and supported the likes of Bonjah, TZU, Xavier Rudd and The Little Stevies. Bryce Cuttriss and Joel Evans started writing songs together when they were 14, somewhere along the coastal foreshore, with Joel singing and Bryce singing and playing guitar, and things haven’t changed much since. The songs are in turns funny, sad, bouncy and infectious, and they always tell a story – in songs like Bohemian Reggae Lover, Boat Afloat and TIA, the lyrics tell tales of lost girls, religious interference, and the greatest evil of them all: tram inspectors.
