Turtle Bay Television made their start in 2012 as a four piece indie rock outfit. Though primarily a post-punk act now, the project has been greatly influenced by the big-band sounds of Broken Social Scene, Wilco, Vampire Weekend and Mistki. As such, they have steadily grown to include a brass section and a rotating cast of backup singers and instrumentalists. Since the release of their second EP, Scared of Everything, the band has become the pet project of frontman and songwriter, Thomas Cockram, who writes and records the majority of the band’s material. The remaining members help to translate the songs to the live setting and also provide valuable insights throughout the recording process, both in terms of compositional decisions and contributing parts to the recordings. In the coming months, the band are excited to release their as-yet-untitled debut album. The release will see the band maintain their post-punk roots but also embrace a new theatrical, gothic aesthetic, influenced by German Expressionist films and Herk Harvey’s cult horror classic Carnival of Souls. This will be explored further in a number of visual shorts and artistic collaborations to be released alongside the musical releases.
