UGLY are a couple of weirdos. The pair are polar opposites, literally: keys player/producer Rob Major is Australian/Tasmanian and singer Ella Jean is Canadian. When the two began playing together in London, Ella joined the hip-hop outfit Unexpected Guests which Rob was running. They found that, while jazz, hip-hop, soul and funk were their favourite genres to play in, their taste crossed over in punk, shoe-gaze and art rock too. Their method of making is using a singer-songwriter approach to danceable music. Early on in their collaboration, the two came out to each other. He’s Christian and she’s queer which is simultaneously the most and least important thing about them. Their weirdness and wild, quirky energy only comes out (of the closet) when they join forces as the UGLY duo.
