Jo Steel has combined her love of work as an early childhood educator and musician to develop Ukubebe Music: a specialist early childhood music education program in Sydney. Jo is constantly inspired by the transformative effect music has on individuals of all ages, its ability to uplift and calm, and impact positively every part of life. From a young age, Jo has always enjoyed writing songs on piano, guitar and ukulele. Her motivation for writing children’s music stems from the everyday work with her young students: their love of life and learning, their joy and wonder, and their ability to always have fun! Jo’s first children’s album for Ukubebe, I Love to Play (2015), has a focus on playful songs on ukulele, a feature of the Ukubebe program. An experienced singer, Jo performs her own works and presents music education workshops (ECCPA 2015, and in Sydney from 2013 to present). She has conducted choirs and has been extensively involved in community and church music. Jo’s earlier teaching was at Rocking Horse Music (2002-2010) in Canberra, where she practiced the philosophies and methodologies of Kodaly, Orff & Dalcroze. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused Jo to reflect on the role that music plays in the everyday lives of families with young children, particularly their mental health and well-being. During 2020-2021, Jo has collaborated with Misha Mullov-Abbado, London-based jazz bassist and composer. They have co-produced Jo’s second album for Ukubebe Music, Watermelon Jazz: a collection of Jo’s original songs, performed largely by members of Misha’s band, inspiring children with the great sounds of jazz.
