Umami Coast is the new solo project of Tom Campey, a Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist and producer, previously of Brisbane psychedelic disco funk band Das Rumpus and London electro rock duo Prince of Mars. Drawing inspiration from the space disco of Todd Terje and Lindstrom, and the darker beats of artists like Stephan Bodzin and Rival Consoles, Umami Coast's largely instrumental electronic music is in aimed in equal measures at the dance floor and the headphones. The emphasis on melody and the introspective feel invites comparisons with releases from the Innervisions and Afterlife labels. The debut EP 'Winter Highway' sits on the darker side of the Umami Coast palette. With driving four on the floor beats, stomping bass guitar and a lush array of synths, it's the kind of music to listen to on a late night drive out of the city and into the wild.
