Formed by front-man/bandleader and primary songwriter Michael Best, Ursa Major began taking shape in early 2006 and has slowly been building up original material. Their style can be described as a combination of rock, fusion and experimental music with strong improvisational elements. The rhythm section is tight yet flexible; with Josh Barber’s jazz and funk influenced drumming style and Aaron Lam’s bass lines providing the foundation on which the intricate keyboard playing of James Bowers and the guitar playing and high tenor singing of Michael Best can build. Their influences are wide ranging but as evidenced by their sound they are heavily influenced by not only the grand rock music of bands such as Led Zeppelin, King Crimson and The Mars Volta but also the pioneers in the jazz fusion movement (the likes of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin), and funk musicians such as Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder and James Brown. They seem to be off to a promising start; in April 2006
