The Mushroom Group shares the latest single from its Mushroom 50 project, with Vika & Linda offering their version of Renée Geyer’s sultry single ‘Heading In The Right Direction’. Throughout 2023, Mushroom is commemorating fifty years of unforgettable songs with a project of reimagined singles, with artists across the Group covering some of Mushroom’s stellar catalogue. The Vika & Linda tribute to Renée is laced with personal connection and admiration between singers. The reverence the sisters hold for Renée is profoundly clear: “This is Renée’s song. Every time we hear it, it reminds us of her and what an incredible singer she was. We both love it because of the way Renée sang it, and also when we were growing up it became the unofficial islander anthem and everyone would sing along to it.  That and the fact that it has a killer chorus.” On their approach to covering such an iconic song by an iconic voice, Vika & Linda share: “We had to find our own way through the song by trying to avoid doing a direct copy of Renée’s version. Firstly, the obvious point of difference is that there are two of us singing it, so we began by looking at the arrangement and dividing up who would sing what. Then we made a conscious decision with our band to try a tougher and simpler approach to the music as a way to support the vocals. Our challenge was trying not to copy but rather pay homage to Renée.”
