The members of Voice Mail met in 2013 playing Magic: the Gathering, but musically their paths would not intersect until 2019. In the meantime, Kai and Sean persistently wrote demo after demo of material, blending Sean’s sadboi lyrics with Kai’s smooth vocals, while Kemble crafted beats as VANBEATOVEN. Kai and Kemble eventually floated the idea of collaboration and with Sean the trio was born. Initially calling themselves ‘Sad Funky Bois’, eventually the name ‘Voice Mail’ stuck, evoking the difficulties of communication in the modern world, but somehow also looking to the past, glitchy like a broken answering machine.
