Introducing Wiles, the lush indie-pop project from Sydney’s Ellen Fitzgibbon. A prolific presence in the Sydney band scene as a member of Mega Faüna, Skeleten and Flowertruck, Wiles is the portal to Ellen’s own sonic world - one of oozy, flowy synths, hooky melodies and chorus-drenched guitar, which Ellen describes as ‘music about thinking, for feeling’. Debut EP World Undone will be out September 19, 2025 on Blossom Rot Records. Growing up in Sydney’s outer western suburbs, where the metropolis meets the mountains, Ellen was raised on a healthy mix of Irish folk music, Bob Dylan and her older brothers’ Offspring CDs. Piano lessons in her early years, self-taught guitar in high school and a teenage discovery of shoegaze and trip-hop sounds of the 90s and 00s (Saint Etienne, Cibo Matto, Morcheeba, basically anything on the Buffy soundtrack) have been big factors in the Wiles sound - all run through the intimate compression of a late-night voice memo, and imbued with influences such as Broadcast, Beach House and The Cocteau Twins. Listening to Wiles evokes a sense of familiarity - kind of like the feeling of running in to an old friend in the midnight hours of a house party, finding a corner just the two of you, and getting lost in a long nostalgic conversation while a dancefloor pulses away nearby. Elaborating on this idea of a private moment amidst the bustle of life, Ellen admits that this first body of work represents working out who you are, and where you fit in to the world: “Writing songs is how I figure it all out, and process things… so the themes that come instinctively are generally just what is going on in my brain”. And then, the sun’s coming up, the party’s over, and you leave with a heart full of warmth and wonder as to when you’ll experience that fleeting pleasure again. Maybe at a Wiles show? Friends abound at the live set - Ellen’s band features big brother and producer Russell Fitzgibbon (Skeleten, Fishing) as well as Al Wright (Cloud Control, Vlossom) Doug Wright (Fishing, Body Promise), and David Gauci (Gauci, Flowertruck).
