Born in Taipei and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau, Naarm-based singer-songwriter Y.C. Liu is no stranger to migration. Guided by his distinctive, velvet baritone voice, and guitar-playing that is at once fragile and free, his music speaks to the parts of ourselves that emerge when we traverse often difficult and uncertain emotional terrain. His debut release ‘Some Nights’ has an unmistakable warmth that evokes the image of a family huddled around a campfire at dusk. Written after the passing of his father, it is a tender ode that explores the unravelling of identity in the wake of loss, and is the first single from his debut album, set for release in 2023.
