Yojimbo (用心棒 Yōjinbō?) is a 1961 jidaigeki film directed by Akira Kurosawa. It tells the story of a nameless ronin, or samurai with no master (Toshirô Mifune), who enters a small village in feudal Japan where two rival businessmen are struggling for control of the local gambling trade. I see these business men as the major record labels struggling to keep control of the music scene. The ronin convinces both the silk merchant and the sake merchant (who are on opposing sides of the brewing turf war) to hire him as a personal bodyguard, then artfully sets in motion a full-scale gang war between the two ambitious and unscrupulous men. The way the ronin leads the money hungry business men on just to bring them to a mutual demise describes perfectly my attitude towards mainstream media. For this reason i never expect or intend to garner a large level of fame as i am not prepared to let go of my musical integrity or frankly give two fucks about what the general populous really want.
