Younger Than Me is the side-project of Sydney musicians and close friends Emma Davis and Annie McKinnon. Since meeting at a show 10 years ago, the pair have been quietly honing their skills together, building textures and sounds between each other’s homemade studios and always pushing one another into new territories. During the first Covid lockdown, they finally found a quieter moment between day jobs and an architecture degree and shaped their ideas into a collection of intricate and playful tracks. With carefully chosen synthetic textures weaving perfectly around acoustic elements, it’s music born out of friendship, a deep mutual respect and a need to strip away all expectation and play for playing’s sake. Described as a mix between perfectionism and slapdashery, the project sees Annie’s design background and unique and exploratory handling of sound, offset by Emma’s melodic sensibilities and ability to finesse an idea down to its core. “It’s the point where we meet, away from the seriousness, in a place we hope others enjoy just as much as we do.” It’s sophisticated and beautifully layered music and it’s been worth the wait…. ‘Lots of beautiful textures here, love the layering of voices in particular, underpinned with that production. Warm and sharp at the same time’ - Zan Rowe (triple j) ‘Where's this project been hiding? Together Annie and Emma are making hypnotic pocket-sized pop that actually feels starry and expansive once you're in it’ - Dave Ruby Howe (triple j) ‘There’s just something about this duo that makes you think we’ll be hearing a lot more of them in the future’ - Australian Musician 'The warmth and spark of its beats and melodies create this cosy, joyous feeling, like re-discovering your favourite cardigan on a cold day' - Lee Tran Lam (FBi)
